На протяжении вот уже более сорока лет, начиная с 1965 года, школы в начале октября по-особенному шумны и торжественны — скоро День учителя. В эпоху Советского Союза этот профессиональный праздник отмечался в первое воскресенье октября.
В 1994 году ЮНЕСКО учредила Всемирный день учителя (World Teaches’ Day), отмечаемый ежегодно 5 октября. С этого же года Россия вошла в список стран, отмечающих День учителя в этот же день, — по Указу Президента Российской Федерации от 3 октября 1994 года № 1961 День учителя стали отмечать 5 октября.
В 1995 году Указом президента РФ установлено почетное звание — Заслуженный учитель Российской Федерации, которое в День учителя присваивают педагогам, посвятившим делу воспитания и обучения более 15 лет и внесшим в него значительный вклад.
Также традиционно в этот день или накануне проходит награждение победителей конкурса «Учитель года», который проводится с 1990 года.
Каждый человек, несомненно, имеет свои воспоминания о школьных годах — любимые и нелюбимые (но они просто были строгими) учителя, предметы, которые давались легко, и те, для экзамена по которым требовалось создание замысловатой вязи шпаргалок. Вспоминаются и школьные товарищи-подруги, с которыми велись разговоры на всевозможные и невозможные темы.
Многое, конечно, позабылось, но можно с уверенностью сказать, что имя первой учительницы помнит большинство учеников. В День учителя многие поздравят ее, поинтересуются здоровьем и делами в школе. Она посетует на нынешнюю молодежь и вздохнет: «Вот в ваши годы…».
Кроме того, что работа учителя требует колоссального терпения и постоянного профессионального совершенствования, ее значение для формирования и развития общества невозможно переоценить. Труд учителей и преподавателей заслуживает глубокого признания и благодарности.

World Teachers’ Day is an international day held annually on 5 October to celebrate the work of teachers.[1] Established in 1994, it commemorates the signing of recommendation by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The 1966 «ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers»[2][3] is a standard-setting instrument that addresses the status and situations of teachers around the world.[4] This recommendation outlines standards relating to education personnel policy, recruitment, and initial training as well as the continuing education of teachers, their employment, and working conditions.[4] World Teachers’ Day aims to focus on «appreciating, assessing and improving the educators of the world» and to provide an opportunity to consider issues related to teachers and teaching.[5]

To celebrate World Teachers’ Day, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and Education International (EI) mount a campaign each year to help give the world better understanding of teachers and the role they play in the development of students and society.[4] They partner with the private sector such as media organizations to achieve this purpose. The campaign focuses on different themes for every year. For instance, «Empowering Teachers» was the theme for 2017, the year World Teachers’ Day commemorated the 20th anniversary of the 1997 UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Higher-Education Teaching Personnel,[2] bringing the sometimes-neglected area of teaching personnel at higher education institutions into the conversation about the status of teachers.[6]
The following year, 2018, UNESCO adopted the theme «The Right to Education Means the Right to a Qualified Teacher,»[7] commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) and serving as a reminder that the right to education cannot be realized without trained and qualified teachers.[7] UNESCO declares that everyone can help by celebrating the profession, by generating awareness about teacher issues and by ensuring that teacher respect is part of the natural order of things.[5] Schools and students, for instance, prepare a special occasion for teachers on this day.
More than 100 countries commemorate World Teachers’ Day[8] and each holds its own celebrations such as the case of India, which has been commemorating National Teachers’ Day every 5 September.[9] In Australia, as the day usually falls during school holidays, Australian states and territories celebrate on the last Friday of October each year instead.[10][11]

День учителя в России отмечается ежегодно 5 октября. Дата совпадает с Всемирным днем учителя. Праздник справляют сотрудники всех образовательных учреждений.

Ученики и их родители поздравляют педагогов с профессиональным праздником, желают им здоровья и успехов в нелегком труде, вручают букеты цветов и подарки. В школах проходят праздничные линейки, выступления творческих коллективов с песенными и танцевальными номерами. Проводятся выставки работ воспитанников, размещаются стенгазеты. В некоторых школах устраивается День самоуправления, когда ученики ведут уроки.
В учреждениях культуры руководство управления министерства образования поздравляет учителей, награждает лучших сотрудников и победителей конкурса «Учитель года» грамотами, медалями, ценными подарками. Педагоги со стажем более 15 лет, которые внесли значительный вклад в обучение детей, получают звание «Заслуженный учитель Российской Федерации». Первые лица государства выступают с благодарственными речами, упоминают о роли этой профессии в развитии общества, отмечают достижения и трудности системы образования.
В День преподавателя коллеги устраивают застолья. Учебный процесс сокращается или полностью посвящается торжественным мероприятиям.
История
День учителя впервые был учрежден указом президиума Верховного Совета СССР от 29 сентября 1965 года. Его отмечали в первое воскресенье октября. С 1994 года Россия справляет праздник 5 октября, в соответствии с Указом Президента Российской Федерации Б. Ельцина от 3 октября 1994 года № 1961.

О профессии
Учителя просвещают и воспитывают учеников, формируют и изменяют их личности. Они во многом обязаны успехам и неудачам подопечных в их дальнейшей жизни.
Чтобы стать учителем, необходимо закончить высшее или среднее специальное педагогическое образование. Для этого нужно освоить знания, которые связаны не только с профильными предметами, но и с воспитательной деятельностью.
Выпускник должен быть разносторонне развитым, стремиться к самосовершенствованию, обладать эмпатией (способность ощутить себя на месте другого человека), рефлексией (осознание собственных мыслей и поступков). Основополагающими личностными качествами преподавателя выступают доброжелательность, готовность помогать и быть самоотверженным в труде.
Учитель – творческая профессия. Она требует способности находить уникальные подходы к каждому ученику, вне зависимости от его особенностей, добиваться понимания материала, логического мышления.
