2. How   do   the   British   celebrate   the   New   Year?

The first of January, New Year’s Day, is a big holiday in Scotland. Scottish people celebrate New Year’s Eve in every family. Friends usually come on that day.

They have a good dinner. After dinner there are apples, other fruit, and different sweets to eat. Then all the family and the friends begin to play games and dance. Before twelve o’clock at night many people in the towns go out into the streets to dance and to sing songs.

In England New Year’s Day is not a big holiday, it is not so popular. Very many people go to bed before twelve o’clock on New Year’s Eve. But some families celebrate this evening at home. At midnight they also go out into the streets and squares.

In London people go to the Trafalgar Square. In this square they see a great tree brightly decorated with little lamps. When the largest clock of London — Big Ben — begins to strike twelve, the people in the square join their hands and sing. They also wish a Happy New Year to each other. New Year is one of the favourite holidays for many people in Great Britain.

What   do  you   know   about   Good Friday?

Good Friday is the Friday before Easter Sunday. On this day, Christians remember the day when Jesus was crucified on a cross. The name may be derived from ‘God’s Friday’ in the same way that good-bye is derived from ‘God be with ye’. It is traditional to eat warm ‘hot cross buns’ on Good Friday. The pastry cross on top of the buns symbolizes and reminds Christians of the cross that Jesus was killed on.

  1. Easter

Easter is the most important holiday of the year. Easter egg is called pysanka. Preparation for Easter starts seven weeks ahead of time with the advent of Lent. Believers don’t eat meat and animal products.  Palm Sunday, the week before Easter, is known as Willow Sunday. People bring home willow branches which have been blessed in church. The week is dedicated to preparing for Easter. The Thursday before Easter is called Clean Thursday. According to the tradition one should bathe before sunrise on this day. The house must be clean too. Good Friday is the day that the women of the family bake «paska», Easter bread. How  do   people   celebrate   Hallowe’en  in  Britain?

— Halloween is a festival that takes place on October 31. Halloween developed from new year festivals and festivals of the dead. Christian church established a festival on November 1 called All Saints’ Day so that people could continue to celebrate their festivals.

The main Halloween activity for children is trick-or-treating. Children dress in costumes and masks and go from door to door saying «trick or treat». The neighbours give children such treats as candy, fruit and pennies so that children do not play tricks on them. An Irish legend says that jack-o’-lanterns are named after the man called Jack. He could not enter heaven because he was a miser, and he could not enter hell because he had played jokes on devil. As a result, Jack has to walk on the earth with his lantern until Judgment Day.

People once believed that there were many ghosts and witches on the Earth and that they met on October 31 to worship the devil. Today, people do not believe in ghosts and witches but they like to tell stories about them on Halloween.

Teacher: Thank you. Very good! I’m sure that you know a terrible story. You are welcome.

  1. What do you know about Thanksgiving Day?

There is one day a year when all Americans stay home with their families and eat a big dinner. This is Thanksgiving Day. The pilgrims celebrated the first Thanksgiving Day in the fall of 1621. The pilgrims sailed to America for religious freedom. The pilgrims first winter in the New World was very difficult. They had arrived too late to grow many crops. Without fresh food half of the pilgrims died. The following spring the Indians taught the pilgrims how to hunt, fish, plant and survive in America. They were thankful and decided to celebrate with a Thanksgiving feast. They prepared a dinner of turkey, corn, beans and pumpkins. Americans still celebrate Thanksgiving Day in the fall. It is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November. Turkey is still the main dish and pumpkin pie is the most popular dessert.

Halloween is a festival that takes place on October 31.. It is very funny and interesting holiday. They do funny pumpkins and like telling strange and horrible stories about ghosts and witches. People once believed that there were many ghosts and witches on the Earth and that they met on October31 to worship the devil. The main Halloween activity for Children is trick-or-treating. Children dress in costumes and masks and go from door to door saying «trick or treat». The neighbors give children such treats as candy, fruit and pennies. So that children do not play tricks on them.

Name this holiday.

P: X-mas.

Т.: Yes, you are right. Who tells us about X-mas in Britain?

P: I do. Christmas Day is celebrated on December 25. For most British families this is the most important festival of the year. Christmas is a time for eating. There are a lot of traditions connected with Xmas, but the most important on is the giving of present. The traditional food is turkey, Christmas cake, Christmas pudding made of fruits. Over the end of the bed people hang stockings. Children believe that Santa Claus will come down the chimney and fill the stockings with presents. A carrot for the reindeer is usually left on fireplace. On the Sunday before Xmas many churches hold a service. Every family has its own X-mas fir-tree.

Т.: Good! Is it a religious holiday?

P4: Yes, it is.

Т.: Do we celebrate it in our country?

P4: Yes, we do.

Т.: When?

P4: On the 7th of January.

Thank you. Let’s go on. What season comes after winter? Look at the screen and name the holiday. (видео) The early-spring holiday, which we celebrate usually in April or May. What is it?

P: Easter.

— Yes, it is. Who can tell us about it?

P7: I can. Easter is a Christmas holyday in March, April or May. At Easter people usually exchange dyed eggs and go to the church. Many modern Easter symbols came from pagan times: the egg was a fertility symbol, the Easter Bunny also is a symbol of a new life.

The Easter Bunny has usually a basket of eggs. The Easter Bunny colors eggs for young children to find on Easter morning. Easter is a spring holiday and it has a religious background. On Easter we celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Today children in Britain like eating candy bunnies and listening to the stories about the Easter bunny.

T: Thank you. Name the symbols of Easter.

IV.            Guess what holiday it is. Fill in the table.

1)      For more British families, this holiday is the most important festival of the year. It combines the celebration the birth of Christ and the traditional festivities of winter.   On the Sunday before churches hold carol services. Carol singers can be heard on the street as they collect money for charity. People decorate their houses with a holly wreath and put a fir tree.  Children find presents in their stockings.

2)      There is a lot of dancing, eating and fireworks. Before the holiday people write the «resolutions» (the list of the things should be made next year). On this day people usually visit their friends. In Scotland they bring a piece of coal for good luck.

3)      This holiday means «holy evening». At parties people dress up in strange costumes and pretend they are witches. People make up lamps of pumpkins and other vegetables. Some children dress in white sheets, knock on doors and ask if you would like a «trick or treat». If you give them some money or some sweets, a «treat», they go away. If not, they play a «trick» on you, such as making a lot of noise or splashing water in your face!

4)      People send cards to people they love. They should not write their names on the cards. Those who get them must guess who sent them.

5)      The name of this holiday comes from “Eostre”, the Anglo-Saxon goddess of spring. Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ, many people celebrate the beginning of  spring. This holiday is celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon in spring. That’s why it’s on a different date each year.

People dye eggs in various colours.      Bunnies, chicks, lambs and flowers are associated with it because they are born in the spring.

Egg rolling game is very popular in Wales.

6)      The English celebrate this holiday by burning a dummy, made of straw and old clothes, on a bonfire, at the same time letting of fireworks. This dummy is called a «guy» and children can often be seen on the pavements saying «Penny for the guy». If they collect enough money they can buy some fireworks.

7)      It is the next day after Christmas. It`s time to receive presents for friends and relatives, a shopping holiday, the day for different sport events and hunting.

8)       We are glad and very gay.

We all dance and sing and say:

    «Merry, merry, ____________ Day!»

10)  Five little pumpkins sitting on a gate.

The first one said: «It’s getting late!»

are a lot of New Year traditions in Russia. In every home there is a New Year tree with
lights and decorations. Children always wait for Father Frost to come and give them a
present. Many people think New Year’s day to be a family holiday.

But in England not all English people celebrate New Year. A lot of people go to
Trafalgar Square to see the Christmas tree. They have a New Year party at home. When Big
Ben strikes 12 they drink a toast for the New Year.

Thank you for your interesting stories

The second group will tell us about other holidays — they are: Maslenitsa and
Easter.

P 3

People in Russia have many traditions. One of them is Maslenitsa. On this holiday
people say good-bye to winter. People in both countries cook pancakes with honey or
sour-cream, they sing songs and dance. In England this holiday is celebrated in a
different way.

P4

Christmas Day is celebrated on December 25. People of different countries celebrate
Christmas in various ways. Christmas is a time for eating. The traditional food is turkey,
Christmas cake, Christmas pudding made of fruit. Candles at Christmas also go back to
those times. People believed then that their light helped them to forget the darkness of
winter.

The next group of pupils will tell us about Women’s day and Victory day- they
are celebrated in both countries in Russia and in Great Britain. Are these holidays
celebrated in the same way — listen to your classmates.

P5

The 8th of March is a happy and nice holiday. Each family celebrates this spring
holiday. In the morning, men go to the shops to buy some flowers. They try to clean flats
and to cook a holiday dinner.

Sons help their fathers too: they make a cake, lay the table and wash dishes after
holiday dinner.

There is almost the same holiday in England. It is called Mothers’ Day and celebrated
also in spring. Flowers and cakes are the traditional gifts for all women England.

All women try to be nice and happy on this day.

P6.

In Russia we celebrate Victory day on the 9th of May. On this day, the radio
and television broadcast parade held in the Red square. High officials attend this parade.
They place a wreath of flowers at the tomb of Unknown Soldier. All stand in silence for a
few minutes. In Great Britain people celebrate Remembrance Day on the 11th of
November. On this day, the Royal family and political leaders come to the Cenotaph to lay
wreaths at its foot. War veterans march past the memorial. An endless line of people
wishing to honour the veterans and those were killed in the war follows.

You know that tea is the most popular drink in Britain. Focus your attention on this
text. You will have 2 minutes to read it. Then we shall check whether you understand it.

Card 3

1. Why do the British Like Drinking Tea?

Everything in Britain, says a popular song, stops for tea. It’s true that tea is the
most popular drink in Britain — far more popular than coffee. The Dutch brought the first
tea to Europe in about 1610. By 1750 tea had become the principal drink of all the people
in Britain. Tea was kept in special containers called tea-caddies, often with a lock.
Nowadays, tea-drinking became a fashionable social ritual. That’s why there are a lot of
tea gardens in London, where people could walk in the afternoon and enjoy a cup of tea
with bread and butter and cakes. Many years ago tea parties were also popular at home, and
soon the “afternoon tea” a real tradition. Today the custom of tea-time
continues. Most people in Britain prefer strong cup of tea with milk.

Now I am going to read some statements to you. Your task is to decide whether these
statements true or false. Listen to the following statements.

  • Coffee in Britain as popular as tea.
  • By1750 tea had become the principal drink of rich people in Britain.
  • Most people in Britain prefer to drink tea with milk.
  • English people prefer not very strong tea.
  • Tea was kept in opened boxes in the kitchen.
  • Tea became so popular that tea gardens appeared in London.

Over the end of the bed people hang stockings. Children believe that Santa Claus will come down the chimney and fill the stockings with presents. Everything in Britain, says a popular song, stops for tea. It’s true that tea is the most

popular drink in Britain — far more popular than coffee. The Dutch brought the first tea

to Europe in about 1610. By 1750 tea had become the principal drink of all the people

in Britain. Tea was kept in special containers called tea-caddies, often with a lock.

Nowadays, tea-drinking became a fashionable social ritual. That’s why there are a lot

of tea gardens in London, where people could walk in the afternoon and enjoy a cup

of tea with bread and butter and cakes. Many years ago tea parties were also popular

at home, and soon the “afternoon tea” a real tradition. Today the custom of tea-time

continues. Most people in Britain prefer strong cup of tea with milk.

Now I am going to read some statements to you. Your task is to decide whether these

statements true or false. Listen to the following statements.

Coffee in Britain as popular as tea.
